What to Do if You’ve Lost Your Hearing Aids

Matt DearingTips and Tricks

You’ve picked out the perfect pair of hearing aids, had them fitted and programed to suit your needs, and paid in full. They’ve revolutionized your life, and you can’t imagine not having them. Then one day you touch your ear and your hearing aid isn’t there, or you reach for them in the morning and you can’t see them anywhere. If you’ve ever left your favorite sweater at a restaurant, misplaced your wedding ring, or lost your wallet you can relate. There’s the minutes of frantic searching, then the sinking feeling as you realize the hearing aid is probably gone for good. If you can’t find one or both of your hearing aids, don’t panic. Follow these tips, and you’ll be back to hearing in no time.

Retrace your steps

Start by looking in all the places you were recently. Where was the last place you remember having your hearing aids? Was it in front of the TV, or in the restaurant across town? Go back to the living room to jog your memory, then retrace your steps to the kitchen or wherever you went next. Where were you when you noticed your hearing aid was missing, and what were you doing then? Carefully search your home, car office, or purse.

Perhaps the last place you remember having your hearing aid was at a store or restaurant. Call them, or go visit. It’s possible they found your hearing aid, and will be relieved to get it back to you. If they don’t have your hearing aid, leave your name and phone number in case it turns up in the next day or two.

Warranty or Insurance Coverage

If you didn’t find your hearing aid after searching your home or retracing your steps, call us. Many hearing aids are actually under a manufacturer’s warranty that covers a one-time loss replacement. These warranties are anywhere from one to three years, and could provide you with a new set of hearing aids for a small fee. We can tell you if your hearing aid is under warranty, and order replacement hearing devices. If you purchased hearing aid insurance for your hearing devices through ESCO or a similar provider, it’s time to call them now, and start the process of getting a new hearing aid.

Tracking Your Hearing Aids

Some of the top hearing aid manufacturers like ReSound and Starkey have thought about this problem, and come up with a solution. Hearing aids are small and easy to lose, so why not create a program that will track your devices? These hearing aids connect with your smartphone, and include a Find My Hearing Aid app that tracks the location of your hearing aids, so you’ll never be in a panic. Just use the app to locate your hearing aids wherever they are, be it at home or way across town.

How to Avoid Losing Your Hearing Aids

Of course, it’s better not to lose your hearing aid in the first place. Knowing what to do to find your hearing aid is important, but it’s also vital for hearing aid wearers to know what to do to avoid losing hearing aids.

Storage: Always store your hearing aids in a safe place, away from kids or pets. Get into the habit of putting them in the same place every night so you’ll always know where they are, and will be less likely to misplace them. If you take them out for your gym class or at the pool, put them in a safe place in your bag.

Fit: Make sure your hearing aids fit snuggly into your ear. If they’re loose you’re more likely to experience feedback, and it’s easier for them to fall out. Let us know if they feel loose, and we’ll make sure they are fitting properly for comfort, sound quality, and safety.

We understand that losing a hearing aid can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to stop you from hearing. Retrace your steps, enlist your friends and family to help you search, look at your warranty policy, and get replacement hearing aids as soon as possible. Maybe you’ve been thinking about upgrading your hearing aids, and this is a good opportunity. Consider getting some new technology that could save you from the stress of losing your hearing aid, and protect your valuable investment.
