What’s Wrong With My Hearing Aid?

Have you had trouble with your hearing aids? Have sounds been muffled, or have you been experiencing feedback? Are the batteries draining faster than they used to? Hearing aids need to be treated with care. You’ve invested in quality hearing aids, so make sure you keep them in good working order. Here are some common concerns, and simple things you can do to fix them.

My Hearing Aids Are Dead

Some problems are fixed very easily. Check the batteries of your hearing aid to see that they are inserted correctly, and make sure the positive and negative (+ and -) ends on the batteries are properly aligned with the battery case. Always store your batteries in a dry place. It’s recommended to keep a spare set of batteries on hand wherever you go, so you don’t run out of power at a critical moment. Sometimes the battery contacts, or the metal prongs that touch the battery when the door is closed, get dirty and don’t connect. Even if you have a new battery, the hearing aid won’t turn on. Be sure to regularly clean the battery contacts with a dry cloth.

To prolong battery life, open the battery door at night to allow the batteries to dry and to conserve power.

My Hearing Aids Are Too Quiet

Earwax buildup is the leading cause of hearing aid malfunction, and can lead to irritation or infection. Keeping your hearing aids clean and dry is the most important thing you can do! Clean your hearing aids every day with a soft, dry cloth to remove dirt, earwax, and moisture. Once a week, remove the earmold from the hearing aid and wash it with water and a drop of soap. Rinse carefully and leave to dry. Make sure they’re completely dry before you reattach them, and never clean your hearing aid with water! If you struggle with moisture or condensation build up, it’s worth investing in a hearing aid dehumidifier to use overnight. This can really prolong the life of your hearing aid.

If your hearing aid is still too quiet, check that your hearing aids are on the right setting, and consider the possibility that your hearing may have changed.

I Experience a Lot of Feedback

Make sure your hearing aid is clean, and free from dirt and moisture. Damaged tubing can also cause feedback or whistling, so check that the tubing is clean and dry. Examine it for cracks, and see if it’s bent. You may need to replace the tubing every few months. Don’t worry, it’s easy. If you’re still experiencing feedback, check to see if the earmold is fitting correctly, and examine your ears for earwax buildup. Get your earmold refitted, or schedule an appointment to clean your ears.
